Museveni tours Ground Zero

By Carl Bialik

New York -- President Yoweri Museveni led a group of ambassadors and ministers on a tour of Ground Zero in New York City Sunday afternoon. Museveni was "deeply touched" by the 15-minute visit, Uganda’s ambassador to the United States Edith Ssempala told The Monitor.

The group spent their visit on a platform overlooking the site of the former World Trade Center. Alongside the platform was a wall listing the more than 60 countries that lost citizens in the Sept. 11 terrorist attack. Journalists and a team from the mayor’s office greeted the group, and Museveni gave a brief interview to one reporter there, Ssempala said.

"You see it on TV, but this is worse," Ssempala said of visiting the site. "When you go there, you really understand how evil the people who committed this must have been. It becomes nearer. I therefore think it is important for citizens of future generations to experience it."

With approximately 40 heads of state in New York City for the high-level debate at the United Nations general assembly, the New York City Mayor’s office is coordinating a number of visits to Ground Zero by national delegations. Ssempala said the visits by heads of state could bolster support for the U.S war in Afghanistan, in some cases.
